The story begins when the brilliant scientist Sir Claud Amory urgently summons Hercule Poirot to his country home. Sir Claud has developed a powerful new formula for an atomic bomb detonator—an invention of great national importance. He suspects that someone in his household is attempting to steal it.
Before Poirot can fully investigate, Sir Claud is found dead after drinking a cup of coffee that has been poisoned with prussic acid. The crucial formula has also disappeared.
With the doors locked and several guests present—each with possible motives—Poirot begins his meticulous investigation. Among those under suspicion are:
Sir Claud’s son, Richard
His niece, Barbara
Dr. Carelli, a foreign visitor
Other household members and associates
As tensions rise and secrets unravel, Poirot uses his trademark logic and psychological insight to uncover hidden relationships, political intrigue, and deception. Ultimately, he reveals the murderer in a dramatic drawing-room confrontation, restoring order and securing the dangerous formula.
